Photojournalism and Documentary Photography

About this course

The course examines the history and structure of the photo essay, including how photographers use images to explore themes and construct linear or non-linear narratives. Participants produce a short essay and a longer final body of work based on a single subject, using portraiture and abstract imagery where appropriate. Teaching combines step-by-step tutor guidance, individual tasks, practical sessions and discussion of new work each week. Participants develop their projects through editing, sequencing, feedback and review, with progress considered through practical work, observation, questions and Personal Learning Plans.

The course is intended for intermediate and advanced photographers working towards a substantial photographic project. Its advanced level suggests study beyond fundamental techniques, while participants should be prepared to develop a body of work, present images regularly and take part in group discussion.

• Learners must be aged 19 or over at the start of the course.
