About this course
This course examines physics across different scales, from microscopic phenomena to the structure and laws of the universe. Topics include forces and energy, gravity, heat and temperature, light, wave-particle duality, quantum ideas and relativity. Teaching combines tutor presentations with visual examples, demonstration experiments, video material and group discussion. The course explores advanced ideas beyond A level while avoiding mathematical treatment.
What you'll learn
- Explain the concept of force and distinguish between different types of force.
- Describe conservation of energy and momentum, including examples involving heat and thermal equilibrium.
- Outline gravitational attraction, planetary orbits and how gravity varies with distance.
- Describe light as both a wave and a particle, including its interactions with matter and practical applications.
- Explain fundamental ideas about the microscopic world, quantisation and entropy.
- Describe the main principles of Einstein's theory of relativity.
Is this course right for you?
The course is introductory and open to all, with GCSE-level physics or science knowledge recommended. Learners will need a good grasp of English to follow presentations and contribute to group discussions, as well as a willingness to consider other viewpoints.
- Designed for participation through group discussion as well as listening and observation.
- Covers advanced physical ideas without mathematical treatment.
- Requires engagement with demonstrations, visual material and scientific explanations.
Before you go
- Bring a notepad and pen.
