Piano 1A Fast-track

About this course

The course introduces the keyboard layout, five-finger patterns, chords and simple melodies alongside basic music reading. Learners work on posture, hand position and shifting hand position between phrases, supported by tutor explanations and demonstrations. Teaching combines individual playing to the tutor, playing with and alongside classmates, listening activities, group discussion, and aural and theory exercises. Learners also practise listening to their own playing and to others.

What you'll learn

• Demonstrate appropriate posture and hand position
• Play simple five-finger exercises, melodies and chords
• Read and write simple pitches, rhythms and time signatures
• Shift hand position between and within phrases

Is this course right for you?

This course is designed for absolute beginners with no established piano background indicated. Participation includes individual playing, playing with others, listening and group discussion. Learners should be prepared to complete weekly homework and short, regular practice between classes.

Before you go

• Learners need access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class.
• Short practice sessions of at least 10 to 15 minutes, at least four times a week, are expected, alongside weekly homework and other activities outside class.
• Bring a notebook, pencil, eraser and manuscript paper for music notation.
• The course text is Adult Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber, All-in-one Piano Course, Book 1.
• Other materials are supplied by the tutor. Guidance on accessing online recordings and sheet music is provided during the first session.
