About this course

Learners develop piano technique through simple scales, chords and pieces, while working on keyboard layout, hand position, coordination and music reading. The course also introduces basic aural and theory exercises and works towards Grade 1 ABRSM standard. Teaching takes place in a digital piano classroom, with one keyboard per learner. Sessions combine tutor explanations and demonstrations, individual playing, playing with classmates, listening to other learners and group discussion.

What you'll learn

  • Maintain suitable posture and hand position at the piano
  • Shift hand position between and within musical phrases
  • Play simple melodies and accompaniments with increasing independence and hand coordination
  • Read and write simple pitches, rhythms and time signatures
  • Play piano pieces in front of other people

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some basic keyboard and music-reading skills, typically after a term of study. Piano 1A is suggested as an ideal preceding course, rather than stated as an absolute requirement. Participation includes individual playing, playing with classmates, listening, discussion and regular practice between sessions.

Before you go

  • Learners need access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class.
  • Short, regular practice is required between classes, recommended for at least 10 to 15 minutes on four days each week.
  • Bring a notebook, pencil, eraser and manuscript paper for music notation.
  • Headphones are provided, although learners are encouraged to bring their own. The course text will be advised by the tutor, and other materials are supplied.
