About this course

Piano 2B combines tutor explanations and demonstrations with individual playing, group tuition and opportunities to play with or to other learners. Classes take place at individual digital keyboards, with listening and discussion forming part of the learning process. Learners work on aural and theory exercises alongside scales, arpeggios, keyboard exercises and simple pieces played hands together. The course develops rhythmic accuracy, including quavers, semiquavers, triplets and dotted quavers, as well as control of dynamics such as forte, piano, crescendo and diminuendo.

  • Maintain appropriate posture, hand position and warm-up routines.
  • Use effective piano practice techniques and habits.
  • Play scales, arpeggios and exercises in simple major and minor keys.
  • Play simple pieces hands together with reasonable fluency.
  • Interpret varied rhythm patterns and dynamic markings at the keyboard.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at an intermediate level, working at around Grade 2 ABRSM standard. It requires at least a year of playing experience or completion of Piano 2A, along with regular practice between classes and participation in both individual and group activities.

  • Previous piano playing experience or Piano 2A completion is required.
  • Learners should be prepared to practise for 20 to 30 minutes at least four times a week.
  • A piano or digital piano is needed for practice outside class.

Before you go

  • Bring a notebook, pencil, eraser and manuscript paper.
  • The stated course text is Adult Piano Adventures All-in-One Book 2 by Faber.
  • Other materials are supplied by the tutor.
  • Headphones are provided; learners are encouraged to bring their own.
  • Access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class is required.
