About this course

The course develops piano technique through work on posture, hand position, coordination, warm-ups and practice methods. Learners explore touch, articulation, dynamics and expression while playing new and familiar repertoire in different styles. Teaching takes place through tutor explanations and demonstrations, individual playing for the tutor, playing with classmates, listening activities and group discussion. Aural and theory exercises are included, with some use of digital resources to support music study inside and outside the classroom.

What you'll learn

  • Apply suitable warm-up and practice techniques
  • Control touch and articulation, including contrasts between legato and staccato
  • Coordinate the hands and develop greater independence between fingers
  • Read and write musical information including dynamics, articulation and expression markings
  • Perform new and familiar repertoire in a range of styles

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for pianists with at least around one year of experience, typically playing at Grade 2/3 standard. The stated elementary level suggests learners developing beyond fundamental techniques. It also accommodates people returning to piano after a break. Participants should be prepared to practise regularly between classes and contribute to discussions in English.

  • Suitable for learners playing at approximately Grade 2/3 standard
  • Returning pianists are explicitly welcomed
  • Requires short, regular practice between classes
  • Includes discussion and participation in English

Before you go

  • Learners need access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class.
  • Bring a notebook, pencil, eraser and manuscript paper for music notation.
  • Learners may bring piano repertoire they would like to work on; the course text will be advised by the tutor.
  • Headphones are provided, although learners are encouraged to bring their own.
  • Short practice sessions are expected between classes, at least 20 to 30 minutes on four to five occasions each week.
