About this course

The course develops piano technique, musicianship and reading through tutor explanations and demonstrations, supported by individual and group tuition at the keyboard. Learners play to and with others, listen to classmates and take part in group discussion. Aural and theory exercises complement keyboard work, while written homework and individual practice extend the learning between classes. Technical work covers posture, hand position, arm movement, warm-ups, scales, arpeggios and exercises. Repertoire and exercises are used to develop touch, finger independence, melody playing, chordal patterns, contrapuntal music, notation, expression and sight-reading strategies.

What you'll learn

  • Demonstrate suitable posture, hand position and arm movement at the piano.
  • Apply effective warm-up and practice techniques.
  • Play major and minor scales, arpeggios and exercises in keys up to three sharps or flats, including chromatic scales.
  • Control and vary touch with greater sensitivity.
  • Use hand and finger independence when playing melodies, chordal patterns and contrapuntal music.
  • Read and write musical notation, including dynamics, articulation and expression markings, and apply sight-reading strategies.
