About this course

This course uses a masterclass format to examine piano technique, tone, colour, sonority and projection across a wide range of repertoire. Participants analyse and study technique in depth, compare approaches to practice and teaching, and consider repertoire in relation to examinations, concerts and teaching commitments. Tutor demonstrations are combined with group discussion and the exchange of ideas. Work also addresses interpretative decisions, stylistic and historical context, listening, aural perception and communicating musical understanding to an audience.

What you'll learn

  • Apply solid piano technique across a broad range of repertoire
  • Analyse works with greater awareness of their stylistic, aesthetic and historical contexts
  • Make informed interpretative decisions in studied repertoire
  • Demonstrate stronger listening skills and aural perceptiveness
  • Communicate musical understanding more effectively to an audience
  • Compare and evaluate approaches to piano practice and teaching

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for advanced pianists whose playing is at least Diploma standard and who have previous performing experience. Participants are expected to follow written and verbal instructions in English, contribute to class discussions and maintain a regular practice routine between sessions.

  • Previous performing experience is essential
  • Regular practice between classes is expected
  • Classes involve discussion and exchanging ideas within a group of up to 12 learners

Before you go

  • Students need access to an acoustic or digital piano for practice between classes.
  • Students should obtain the scores and music books listed for the course; suitable scores may be available new, second-hand or through IMSLP.
