Piano and keyboard: beginners part 2

About this course

Participants develop foundational piano and keyboard skills through demonstrations, practical exercises, individual and group work, listening, discussion and peer assessment. The course covers keyboard layout, posture, hand position, five-finger patterns, chords, simple melodies and accompaniments. Learners also work on reading and writing basic pitch, rhythm and time signatures, shifting hand positions and coordinating both hands. Ongoing practical activities, individual practice and continuous assessment are supported by verbal and written feedback.

What you'll learn

• Apply appropriate posture and hand position when playing
• Perform five-finger exercises, simple melodies, chords and accompaniments
• Read and write basic pitch, rhythm and time signatures
• Shift hand position within and between musical phrases
• Coordinate the hands when playing simple musical material

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have a little piano or keyboard experience, described by the provider as around three months or equivalent. Participation includes individual practice, group work, peer assessment and playing in front of others.

• Designed as a progression course rather than an absolute-beginners class
• Regular practice between classes is expected
• Includes both individual and group activities

Before you go

• Access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class is recommended for practice.
• Learners are expected to complete an Individual Learning Plan.
• The provider recommends practising for 15 minutes at least four times a week.
• Assistive equipment and access support through reasonable adjustments may be available, subject to assessment by the relevant support team.
