Piano by Ear for Wellbeing

About this course

The course develops piano playing through listening and responding to sounds, with less emphasis on reading music. Participants learn how electric and acoustic pianos differ, use their pedals, practise finger and sitting positions, and work on the C and G major scales. They apply these techniques to songs by playing with separate hands before combining them. Teaching includes observation, participation in class activities and ongoing individual feedback, with informal opportunities to perform. Repertoire includes accessible pieces from classical, pop and jazz.

What you'll learn

• Identify features of electric and acoustic pianos and explain the function of their pedals.
• Use appropriate finger and sitting positions when playing.
• Play the C and G major scales.
• Play selected songs with separate hands and then with both hands together.
• Perform selected pieces informally.
