About this course

The course introduces the layout of the piano keyboard, posture, hand shape and basic fingering for simple melodies and chords. Learners begin reading note names from A to G, treble and bass clefs, simple time signatures and rhythmic patterns, including reading by shape, interval and pattern. Tutor explanations and demonstrations are combined with group playing and individual demonstration tasks. Listening work covers pitch awareness, including identifying high and low sounds and recognising intervals.

• Play at least two simple chords using basic fingering patterns.

Is this course right for you?

Designed for absolute beginners, with no previous musical experience required. Learning combines tutor explanations and demonstrations with group playing and individual demonstration tasks. Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions and make time for regular practice between sessions.

• Regular practice of at least 20 minutes, four to five times a week, is expected.

Before you go

• Learners need access to a full-sized, 88-note weighted digital or acoustic piano for practice. Online learners also need one for lessons.
• The beginners’ programme uses Adult Piano Adventures, All-in-One Piano Course Book 1 by Faber. Learners need to obtain the correct book for their class.
• Class materials, messages, homework tasks and additional learning resources are shared through Google Classroom.
