About this course

This second-stage course develops fluency at the keyboard through work on positions, keyboard geography, accidentals, simple scales, chord patterns, time signatures and common rhythms. Learners explore melodies with chord accompaniment and basic contrapuntal patterns, while practising sight-reading, playing without looking at their hands and applying musical shapes at the keyboard. Teaching combines explanation and demonstration with group playing and individual performance tasks. Aural work focuses on identifying and correcting mistakes, with homework and additional materials shared through Google Classroom.

What you'll learn

  • Coordinate both hands when combining melodies with simple chords
  • Read a wider range of notes on the treble and bass staves
  • Apply accidentals, basic rhythmic patterns and simple time signatures at the keyboard
  • Play simple scales, chord patterns and basic contrapuntal textures
  • Identify and correct playing errors through aural exercises

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have completed Piano/keyboards 1A or have equivalent experience. The stated level indicates progression beyond fundamental beginner skills, including playing simple melodies with chord textures and reading basic notation. Classes involve group playing, individual demonstrations and discussions in English, alongside regular practice between sessions.

  • Previous piano study or equivalent ability is expected
  • Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English
  • Regular practice of at least 20 minutes, four to five times per week, is expected

Before you go

  • Access to a full-sized 88-note weighted digital or acoustic piano is required for practice, and for lessons if taking an online class.
  • A copy of the designated piano course book must be purchased. The title may vary by class, so the correct book should be confirmed before purchase.
