About this course
This course develops fluency at the keyboard through work on rhythmic patterns, legato and finger staccato, dynamic contrasts, and reading major and minor keys. Participants explore keyboard harmony by recognising and playing I, IV and V chords, harmonising simple melodies, and developing aural skills alongside written and practical work. Teaching combines tutor explanation and demonstration with group playing and individual demonstration tasks. Repertoire progresses towards an approximate ABRSM Grade 1 standard, alongside one-octave scales and arpeggios in C, G and F major and A minor.
What you'll learn
- Recognise and play I, IV and V chords in major and minor keys
- Perform one-octave major and minor scales and arpeggios with hands separately
- Use forte and piano dynamics when playing
- Perform staccato and apply reliable legato technique to melodic lines
- Play rhythms containing quavers
- Coordinate both hands when playing simple tunes
