About this course

The course develops fluency through written and verbal instruction, tutor demonstrations, group playing and individual performance tasks. Participants work on legato and staccato articulation, dynamic contrast, rhythmic patterns and coordination while extending their understanding of major and minor keys. Studies include chord inversions, harmonising simple melodies, keyboard harmony and aural work. Repertoire progresses towards an approximate Grade 1 standard, alongside one-octave scales and arpeggios in selected major and minor keys.

What you'll learn

• Play and identify basic I, IV and V chords
• Perform one-octave scales and arpeggios in three major and one minor key, with hands separately
• Control dynamics between piano and forte
• Use legato and staccato techniques in pieces and studies
• Perform quaver and semiquaver rhythms with improved accuracy
• Coordinate both hands when playing pieces

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for learners who have played piano for over a year or completed Piano/keyboards 1E. Participants should be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English, take part in class discussions and engage in regular practice between sessions.

• Previous piano study or equivalent playing experience is expected
• The course includes group playing as well as individual demonstration tasks
• Regular practice outside class is recommended, with a minimum of 30 minutes four to five times per week

Before you go

• Google Classroom is used to share materials, messages and homework tasks.
• Participants need to obtain the correct piano repertoire book for their class.
• Regular practice between classes is recommended.
