About this course

The course develops piano and keyboard playing from approximately Grade 1 repertoire towards Grade 2 material. Lessons cover technical exercises, chords and inversions, scales, arpeggios, sight-reading and harmonising simple melodies, alongside work on hand coordination, rhythm, pulse, dynamics and articulation. Teaching combines tutor explanation and demonstration with group playing and individual demonstration tasks. There may also be opportunities for duets and ensemble exercises, while discussions address style, technical issues and performance skills.

What you'll learn

  • Play and recognise primary chords in a range of major and minor keys
  • Perform major and minor scales and arpeggios over one or two octaves, with hands separately and together
  • Harmonise simple melodies and sight-read keyboard music
  • Coordinate both hands while maintaining rhythm and pulse
  • Identify and perform contrasting dynamics and articulations
