About this course

The course develops hand coordination through varied articulations, including playing legato in one hand and staccato in the other, alongside work on dynamic range, rhythm and keyboard harmony. Learners study scales and arpeggios in major and minor keys, discuss technical problems and performance style, and develop strategies for practising effectively. Teaching combines tutor explanation and demonstration with group playing and individual demonstration tasks. Repertoire progresses from approximately Grade 3 towards Grade 4 standard across the Level 4 modules, with theoretical and aural work supporting understanding of the pieces.

What you'll learn

  • Perform at least three pieces from the class repertoire
  • Use gradual dynamics in piano playing
  • Play four major and three minor scales appropriate to the level
  • Coordinate contrasting articulations between the hands, including simultaneous legato and staccato
  • Apply technical exercises to address a range of playing problems
  • Develop a regular practice strategy for the course repertoire
