About this course

The workshop combines tutor-assigned repertoire with pieces selected by learners, including music being prepared for a graded piano examination. Classes develop technique and musicianship through sight-reading, scales, aural work and theory training, alongside attention to pedalling and musical phrasing. Learners perform for peers and contribute to discussion of those performances. Digital resources, including recordings, online videos, mobile applications and Microsoft Teams, may extend music study beyond the classroom.

What you'll learn

  • Broaden knowledge of piano repertoire
  • Demonstrate improved piano technique
  • Use the sustaining pedal more effectively
  • Shape musical phrases with greater understanding
  • Organise and use practice time more effectively

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for piano players at around Grade 4/5 standard, with at least three years’ experience. The intermediate level indicates study beyond fundamental techniques. Learners should be prepared to practise regularly between classes and take part in discussions of peers’ performances in English.

  • Requires regular practice between classes, including at least 30 minutes on four occasions each week
  • Includes discussion and feedback on peer performances
  • Suitable for learners preparing repertoire for a graded piano examination

  • Bring relevant music scores, a notebook and pencil.
  • Keep a journal for tutor feedback and reflections on practice.
  • Headphones are provided, although learners are encouraged to bring their own.
