Piano: workshop 7

About this course

The workshop examines stylistic and performance issues across piano repertoire at around grade 7 standard, with learners able to bring works of their own choice. Tutor explanation and demonstration are combined with playing and listening activities, alongside discussion of technical problems, style and interpretation. Work includes major and minor scales, arpeggios, layered textures, legato chord sequences, harmonic progression and the coordination of rhythm and pulse. Sessions may also incorporate aural skills, musicianship and music theory.

The course is intended for pianists playing at a standard approaching grade 7 or equivalent, so it is aimed at learners developing beyond fundamental techniques. Participation includes playing, listening, class discussion and following written and verbal instructions in English. A regular practice routine is described as essential for progress.

Before you go

• Learners should have access to an acoustic or digital piano for practice between classes.
• Scores or required music books are needed for the repertoire. Suitable music may be bought new or second-hand, or may be available through IMSLP.
