About this course

The workshop develops piano technique and musicianship through repertoire assigned by the tutor, or pieces selected for graded-exam preparation. Each learner works at a digital keyboard and studies areas including sight-reading, scales, aural skills and theory. Sessions also address pedalling, phrasing and practice methods. Learners contribute to discussions about classmates’ performances and may use recordings, online videos, mobile applications and Microsoft Teams as part of their music study inside and outside class.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate players with at least three years’ experience and performance ability around Grade 4/5 standard. It involves regular individual practice between classes, participation in discussions about peer performances and following discussions and contributing in English.

Before you go

  • Access to an acoustic or digital piano outside class is required.
  • Learners should complete short, regular practice sessions of at least 30 minutes, at least four times a week.
  • Bring relevant music scores, a notebook and pencil. A textbook may be advised by the tutor.
  • Learners should keep a practice and feedback journal.
  • Headphones are provided, although learners are encouraged to bring their own.
