Picture book writing

About this course

The course focuses on the relationship between picture book words and illustrations, and how this shapes story development. Participants examine ideas, themes, structure, character, time span and visual variety, alongside the use of repetition, rhyme and rhythm. The course also considers picture books for older children, page-spread formats, preparing a manuscript, and approaching agents and publishers. Teaching combines tutor presentations, analysis of examples, class discussion, and writing exercises completed individually and in groups.

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Beginner and is intended for learners starting to develop their understanding of picture book writing. No special educational attainments are required, but participants should be able to write fluent English. Sessions include individual and group exercises, discussion and analysis.
