About this course
The course considers how geographic, political and emotional isolation influenced the work of poets including John Clare, Arthur Rimbaud, C. P. Cavafy, Philip Larkin, Stevie Smith, Derek Walcott, Wisława Szymborska and Les Murray. Sessions examine contrasting social, cultural and personal contexts alongside close reading of selected poems. Teaching follows a seminar format, combining tutor-led discussion with small-group conversations and feedback. Some Rimbaud poems are read in both French and English, although discussion focuses on the English versions.
