About this course

Each session examines roughly two to four poems linked by a theme, drawing on different poets, forms and historical periods. Participants consider how language creates meaning and effects, and compare the poems’ treatment of shared themes and concerns. Teaching combines short readings, tutor-led slide presentations and group discussion. Some sessions may focus more closely on one poet or work. Towards the end of each term, the group may suggest themes and poems for a tutor-facilitated discussion.

What you'll learn

  • Discuss poetry from a range of periods and perspectives
  • Identify how poetic language and selected forms contribute to meaning and effects
  • Compare poems in relation to their themes and concerns

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and does not require previous knowledge or experience of studying poetry. It suits learners willing to read short poems and take part in group discussion, with themes and texts varying each term.

  • No previous poetry-study experience is required
  • Participation includes shared reading and class discussion
  • Texts are drawn from a broad range of poets, forms and periods

Before you go

  • Bring a pen and paper for note-taking.
  • Digital handouts of poems and extracts are sent before each session. Reading them in advance may be helpful but is not essential; paper copies are provided in class.
  • The course may be attended again in a later term, when different poems and themes will be offered.
