Portrait Drawing & Painting (All levels)

About this course

Learners develop portrait drawing and painting through observation of a model, interpreting visual information and working from different viewpoints. Teaching covers proportion, perspective, composition, likeness, colour mixing and the representation of surfaces such as skin and hair. The tutor demonstrates techniques and provides practical guidance as participants work in a chosen medium, including graphite, chalk, pen, pastel, watercolour, oils or acrylics. References to portraiture in art history are used to inform individual approaches and the development of a personal style.

Before you go

• Bring A2 or A3 paper or a sketchbook and basic drawing materials to the first lesson.
• Art materials including paper, pencils, charcoal, putty rubbers and erasers are available to buy from the school.
• As learners progress towards painting, advice is provided on suitable media and colour ranges.
