Portrait Head and Expression: Sculpture Master Class

About this course

Participants develop clay-modelled portrait heads by observing and measuring from a life model. The course combines sustained work on a life-size head with quicker portrait exercises exploring expression and character. Teaching includes demonstrations of clay modelling techniques, practical tasks, peer learning and regular tutor feedback. The course also covers clay handling in relation to firing, workshop health and safety, and ways to record and assess progress through sketchbooks and photographs.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with some experience of clay life modelling and is taught at mixed levels, including beginners in the broader course classification. Participants work from a life model, take part in peer learning and receive regular feedback. Teaching is delivered in spoken English with a small amount of writing.

Before you go

• Basic materials are included.
• Wear work clothes or an apron, together with hard shoes or boots. Sandals and high heels are not suitable for the workshop.
• A sketchbook and pencils are useful.
• Clay sculptures can become heavy. Learners who have difficulty lifting heavy loads should inform the tutor, as help is available.
