About this course

The course examines portraiture through drawing and painting from the clothed figure, using live models, drawings and photographs. Early exercises introduce dry and wet approaches, while longer poses allow participants to develop paintings over several weeks alongside shorter studies of changing expression and mood. Teaching combines individual feedback, group tuition and occasional discussions about the work of past and present portrait artists. Participants are encouraged to form their own response to each model while exploring observation, expression, proportion, tone, line, colour and composition.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse the model in relation to perception and expression.
  • Use tone and line when drawing from the model.
  • Apply simple measuring techniques to relate proportions.
  • Mix colours accurately from observation.
  • Examine the internal structure and composition of a painting.
  • Compare portrait approaches from different periods.

Is this course right for you?

The course is labelled Improver, which may suit learners developing beyond fundamental drawing techniques. Participation involves working independently on portraits while receiving individual direction, taking part in group tuition and occasionally discussing work with others.

  • Includes both sustained poses for developing a piece and shorter poses focused on changes in expression and mood.
  • Feedback is provided on individual work alongside group tuition and discussions.

Before you go

  • Participants need drawing materials such as pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink, pen or watercolour.
  • Painting materials may include oils, acrylics or gouache, according to the participant's chosen approach.
