About this course
The course examines how portraits are constructed through scale, proportion, lighting, tone, colour and composition. Learners work directly from a model, producing observational studies and longer pieces, with possible self-portrait and narrative-based projects. Teaching combines practical exercises, demonstrations, informal talks, group discussions and one-to-one tuition. Short projects develop observational drawing, while broader studies bring sketches and gathered information into more finished work. Learners may also take on optional homework tasks and reflect on their own work.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for beginners, while also accommodating learners with some drawing experience who have not previously worked with portraits. Participation includes practical work, one-to-one tuition and group discussion. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information.
