About this course
Participants work from life models and secondary sources to investigate portrait structure, likeness, proportion, colour, tone, volume and expression. Drawing exercises address mark-making and the anatomy of the human head, while painting work develops colour mixing and the construction of a portrait in layers. Teaching combines talks, demonstrations, practical work, group discussion and individual tutoring. Reference to different artists’ approaches is used to examine how mark-making can create expressive drawings and paintings. Optional homework tasks are available for continued practice between sessions.
