Portraiture 3

An all-levels portraiture course combining observational drawing, painting, composition, colour theory and tutor-led studio exercises.
About this course
The course explores portraiture through drawing and painting from observation, including work with a clothed model, self-portraiture and shorter interpretive studies. Learners use measuring techniques to investigate proportion, angles, negative space and the structure of the human form, while viewfinders and preliminary studies support composition planning. Teaching combines demonstrations, individual guidance, tutor feedback, group discussions and presentations of artists’ work. Sessions cover charcoal and soft-pencil drawing, experimental and mixed media approaches, colour mixing, palette management and painting techniques. Learners also discuss historical and contemporary portraiture and share work in a mini exhibition at the end of each session.
