Portraiture – Beginners and Improvers

About this course

Participants work from a model to study facial structure, proportion, form and contour. Drawing exercises develop observation through line and tone, alongside monochrome studies and introductory colour work using pastels or paint. The course also examines warm, cool and earth colours, tonal description and basic measuring methods for placing facial features accurately. Teaching combines practical activities with individual verbal feedback, informal group critiques and a Personal Learning Plan. Learners can share work for discussion while developing portrait studies across a range of materials and techniques.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and improvers, but some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques is required. Participants work from a model, receive individual feedback and take part in informal group critiques. Learners must be aged 19 or over on 31 August before the course starts.
