Postgraduate academic writing

About this course

The workshop examines how postgraduate academic writing differs from other forms of writing and from undergraduate work. It covers the connected practices of thinking, reading, researching, writing and editing, with attention to developing coherent arguments and critical writing. Teaching combines tutor presentations with discussion, practical exercises, reflection and possible in-class reading or critique of written work. Participants also identify areas for development in their own writing and consider strategies for progressing towards postgraduate-level work.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners considering postgraduate study or writing, including those returning to academic work after a break. It presumes experience comparable to Year 3 undergraduate writing, basic knowledge of academic essays, citations and referencing, and a good grasp of English for academic writing. Participation includes discussion, exercises and constructive engagement with other learners’ work.

• Previous undergraduate-level academic writing experience is expected.
• Learners may be returning to academic writing after a break.
• Written work may be discussed or critiqued in an open workshop setting.

• Bring a pen and paper for taking notes; a laptop or tablet may also be used.
