About this course

The course explores both hand building and throwing, with projects focused on three-dimensional form, colour, texture, mark making and imagery. Participants will develop ideas in sketchbooks, use visual research, and practise decorating and glazing ceramic work, including functional objects and techniques such as slab building. Teaching combines demonstrations with group and individual tuition. Learners are encouraged to review their work, discuss ideas and develop approaches appropriate to their experience, including more independent project development for those with previous ceramics practice.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for beginners as well as learners with previous ceramics experience. The Beginner (A1) label indicates an introductory level, while the course also allows more experienced participants to develop personal ideas. Learners should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information, and take part in group discussion and self-reflection.

Before you go

• Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee, but clay and porcelain incur separate charges before firing.
• Departmental tools are available for use; participants may choose to buy their own.
• The potter's wheel motors may pose a serious risk to people with pacemakers or internal defibrillators. Those affected cannot work in the ceramics studio while the wheels are in use and should discuss this with the Ceramics Department before enrolling.
