About this course

The course prepares learners for the Functional Skills English Level 1 qualification by introducing its reading, writing, speaking and listening requirements. Participants work with real-world texts, including articles, reports and instructions, and practise writing formal letters, persuasive emails and professional reports. Sessions also cover punctuation, technical vocabulary and literary devices, alongside presenting ideas, contributing to discussions and responding to others. Learners explore the attendance, homework, independent study and digital skills involved in the accredited course. A tutor assesses readiness for progression to the full qualification.

What you'll learn

  • Identify the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills assessed in the Functional Skills English Level 1 exam.
  • Interpret information in articles, reports and instructions.
  • Produce clear written communications, including formal letters, persuasive emails and professional reports.
  • Apply punctuation, technical vocabulary and literary devices in writing.
  • Present ideas, participate in discussions and respond appropriately to other speakers.
  • Recognise basic digital skills and study commitments needed for an accredited course.

Is this course right for you?

This course is designed for learners preparing to move on to Functional Skills English Level 1. The Beginner (A1) label indicates an introductory level, while the course content involves active participation in discussions and speaking activities, together with homework and independent study. Readiness for the next course is assessed during the programme.

  • It is preparation for the accredited qualification, rather than the qualification itself.
  • Learners who need more time may be directed towards a Getting Ready or another non-exam course.
