Preparing for Functional Skills English (level 1)

About this course

This preparatory course introduces the main areas assessed in Functional Skills English Level 1. Learners work with real-world texts such as articles, reports and instructions, and practise writing formal letters, persuasive emails and professional reports. Sessions also cover punctuation, technical vocabulary and literary devices, alongside presenting ideas, joining discussions and responding to others. The course includes basic digital skills and an introduction to the attendance, homework and independent study expected on the accredited qualification. A tutor assesses each learner’s readiness to progress to the full Level 1 course.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at a Beginner (A1) level preparing to move towards Functional Skills English Level 1. It involves practice across all four communication skills, including presentations and discussions. Learners are also introduced to the attendance, homework and independent study expected on the qualification, with readiness assessed during the course.

• Progression to the full Level 1 qualification is subject to a tutor’s assessment of readiness.
• Learners who need more preparation may be directed towards a Getting Ready or another non-exam course.
