About this course

The course combines set projects with individual printmaking work, allowing beginners to investigate a different focus each term while more experienced learners develop personal projects and techniques. This term’s beginners’ work centres on photo litho, photo polymer and photo etching, including exposing images onto plates and printing them. Teaching includes demonstrations, presentations, group discussions, critiques and one-to-one technical and critical advice. Learners are encouraged to keep a sketchbook, examine their own and others’ work, and consider ideas and techniques within contemporary printmaking practice.

What you'll learn

  • Use photo litho, photo polymer and photo etching processes
  • Expose and develop images on printmaking plates
  • Develop personal printmaking projects across different media
  • Make critical decisions about visual language and individual work
  • Discuss printmaking techniques, artists’ work and peer projects in group critiques
  • Apply relevant health and safety procedures in the workshop

Is this course right for you?

The course brings beginners and more experienced learners together, with individual projects supported by group discussion and one-to-one guidance. No previous printmaking experience is necessary. • Suitable for learners starting printmaking as well as those revisiting techniques
  • Participation includes group critiques, demonstrations and discussion alongside individual work
  • Learners receive technical and critical guidance according to their needs

Before you go

  • Protective clothing and rubber gloves are required.
  • The course fee includes most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents.
  • Paper, etching plates, lino blocks and similar materials must be purchased separately from the department.
  • Health and safety procedures are explained during the course, and learners must sign an agreement to follow them.
  • Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation. Learners should inform the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities so precautions can be advised.
  • The print studio is on the second and third floors and does not currently have wheelchair access.
