Printmaking Beginners: Drypoint and Carborundum Friday Daytime

About this course

Participants create combined prints in black and white or colour, using drypoint to develop lines and marks and carborundum paste to add texture. They will work with different tools and surfaces, exploring how tone, line and texture can be represented and how images can be amended. Teaching includes demonstrations, presentations, group discussions and one-to-one technical or critical advice. Learners also record and review their progress through a Learning Statement, while being introduced to safe use of printmaking equipment and the studio.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners in printmaking, as well as learners with some previous experience who want to renew their knowledge of one or more techniques. No printmaking experience is necessary, but an interest in or experience of drawing or design is described as essential. Teaching combines group activity with individual guidance.

Before you go

• Bring pencils, a small paintbrush and a sketchbook or notebook. Etching tools may be brought if available, but department tools can be borrowed or bought.
• Bring personal protective clothing, including an apron and rubber gloves.
• Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Paper and etching plates or lino blocks must be purchased from the department.
• Health and safety procedures are explained during the course, and learners must sign an agreement to follow them. Some chemicals may be harmful in pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities, so these should be discussed with the tutor.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
