Printmaking Beginners: Exploring Monoprint Friday Daytime

About this course

The course introduces monotype using Cranfield Colour (Caligo) water-washable inks. Participants explore trace monotype, offsetting plates, stencils and painterly monoprinting, considering how ink, paper and mark-making affect the print. Teaching combines demonstrations, examples, samples and resources with group discussion and one-to-one conversations. Results are shared and discussed, allowing participants to examine different approaches and develop an understanding of the medium’s possibilities, whether or not they try every technique.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as learners who want to experiment with monotype and develop new printmaking skills. No previous printmaking experience is required. Participation includes demonstrations, group discussion, one-to-one conversations and opportunities to try techniques individually.

Before you go

• Bring drawing equipment, a selection of paintbrushes, a sketchbook or notebook, and at least one image to work from.
• Unusual or unconventional drawing tools may also be brought for experimentation.
• Scissors and/or a craft knife may be useful.
• Health and safety guidance is provided, and learners must agree to follow the stated procedures.
• Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation in rare cases. Inform the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities so appropriate precautions can be advised.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
