Printmaking Beginners: Photo Etching Friday Daytime

About this course

Participants create a photo etching plate from an adapted photographic image, then alter and extend it using additional etching techniques. The plates are used to produce colour prints and proofs while the image develops through re-etching and adaptation. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussion and individual technical or critical guidance. Learners also investigate marks that communicate tone, line and texture, and record and assess their progress through a Learning Statement.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners, with no previous printmaking experience required. An interest in or experience of drawing or design may be useful. Learners with some previous experience can also use the course to renew or develop knowledge of printmaking techniques. Teaching includes both group activities and individual guidance.

Before you go

• Bring pencils, a permanent marker pen, paintbrushes and a sketchbook or notebook.
• Bring protective clothing, such as an apron, and rubber gloves.
• Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Paper and etching plates or lino blocks are available to buy from the department.
• Health and safety procedures are explained at the start of the course and when needed later. Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation, so learners should inform the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities.
• The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
