About this course

Participants explore how line, texture and colour can be developed through lino cutting and reduction linocut. The course also introduces multiple and monotype printing methods, with learners making additions and amendments to images as they work. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussion and individual technical or critical guidance. Learners record and assess their progress using a Learning Statement, while developing safe working practices in the printmaking studio.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as learners with some previous printmaking experience who want to renew or develop their knowledge. An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be useful. Teaching includes both group activities and individual guidance.

  • Some drawing or design experience may be useful
  • Individual technical and critical advice is provided alongside group teaching

Before you go

  • Bring pencils, a small paintbrush and a sketchbook or notebook.
  • Bring protective clothing, such as an apron, and rubber gloves.
  • Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included.
  • Paper, etching plates and lino blocks are charged separately and can be bought from the department at cost price.
  • Health and safety guidance is provided, and learners must agree to follow the advised procedures.
  • Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or irritating in rare cases. Inform the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities so that necessary precautions can be advised.
  • There is currently no wheelchair access to the print studio, which is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
