Printmaking Etching (All levels)

An all-levels course covering metal-plate etching, acid-based techniques and printmaking through demonstrations, talks and individual or small-group tuition.
About this course
Participants develop etchings on metal plates, exploring plate preparation and processes including hard ground, soft ground, sugar-lift aquatint and drypoint. Printing techniques covered include double-plate registration and chine collé, alongside graphite transfer and selecting suitable methods for a particular result. Teaching combines illustrated demonstrations, discussions and individual guidance within one-to-one or small-group settings. Beginners are introduced to the core processes, while more experienced printmakers can discuss ongoing projects and approaches with the tutor.
What you'll learn
- Prepare a metal plate for etching
- Apply hard ground, soft ground, sugar-lift aquatint and drypoint techniques
- Use double-plate registration and chine collé in printing
- Make a graphite transfer
- Select etching and printing methods suited to a desired result
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced etchers. Beginners are taught the fundamental processes, while experienced printmakers can develop existing projects through individual discussion. Participants need to retain processing steps and work independently to minimise health and safety risks in the studio.
- Suitable for learners at different stages of etching experience
- Includes individual or small-group teaching rather than only whole-class instruction
- Requires participants to work independently with taught processing steps
- Some chemicals used in etching may adversely affect people with asthma
Before you go
- People with asthma should wear a protective mask because some chemicals used in etching may affect them adversely.
- People who are pregnant may need to take medical advice before enrolling.
- No special tools are required at the start. Basic etching tools can be borrowed until students purchase tools relevant to their practice.
- Bring a notebook and pen, 2H, HB, 2B and 6B pencils, and basic small paint brushes. Brushes can be purchased from the school shop.
- More experienced students should bring their own tools and any ongoing plates to the first session.
