Printmaking: Experimental Printmaking Afternoon

About this course

Participants develop individual print projects through a studio induction, tutor demonstrations and guided experimentation. The course explores methods such as monoprinting, drypoint, linocutting, stencils, collography, carborundum, chine collé, layered and multiple-plate printing, with opportunities to combine techniques and investigate colour, texture and mixed media.

What you'll learn

• Experiment with a range of printmaking methods and develop personal techniques.
• Combine print processes to create mixed-media work in response to ideas or themes.
• Use inks, extenders, tools and equipment appropriately within safe printmaking processes.
• Register and edition prints using an etching press and hand-printing methods.
• Plan, produce and assess print work while considering aesthetic choices.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for mixed-ability adult learners with some printmaking or broader art experience, including those developing portfolios or extending an existing practice. The working style is largely self-directed, with demonstrations, individual projects, tutor feedback and opportunities to discuss work and discoveries with the group.

• Not intended for learners with little or no art experience.
• Suitable for learners developing portfolio work or personal printmaking projects.
• Experienced printmakers may be able to bring prepared plates, subject to agreement.

Before you go

• General shared tools and equipment are provided in class.
• Learners are advised to bring a sketchbook or ideas book and a soft pencil each week.
• Previous work should be brought to the first session so the programme can be tailored to individual needs.
• Learners may prepare sketches, drawings, photographs, colour plans, blocks or plates in advance.
• A range of papers, inks and colours is available; learners may also bring their own rollers and knives.
