Printmaking: Experimental Printmaking Evening

About this course

The course introduces studio facilities and print equipment before using demonstrations to explore techniques such as monoprinting, drypoint, linocut, collagraphy, carborundum, stencils, chine collé, layered printing and mixed-media processes. The precise balance of techniques varies according to the group and term. Learners apply methods to their own ideas or projects, with tutor suggestions, feedback and regular demonstrations of complementary approaches. Work may involve experimental colour, textures, multiple plates, registration, editioning and both press-based and hand-printing methods. Safe printmaking procedures, including the use of water-soluble inks and non-solvent systems, are also covered.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improvers extending their printmaking practice, including learners developing work for a portfolio. Participants work on individual ideas while sharing discoveries, discussing work and receiving tutor feedback within the group.

• Suitable for artists from disciplines including painting, photography, sculpture, design and illustration
• Portfolio development, including Access and Pre-foundation work, is supported
• Experienced printmakers may bring prepared plates to print by prior negotiation

Before you go

• Bring a sketchbook or ideas book and a soft pencil to each session.
• Previous work, which need not be printmaking, should be brought to the first session so the programme can be tailored where appropriate.
• Learners may need to prepare sketches, drawings, photographs, colour plans or printing blocks and plates in advance.
• General tools and equipment are provided in class. Learners who work at home may choose to have their own lino-cutting tools.
• A range of papers, inks and colours is available; experienced printmakers bringing prepared plates should arrange this with the tutor.
