Printmaking for Beginners and Improvers

About this course

Participants make printing plates and produce work using techniques including collagraph, linocut, monotype, stencil, lithography, intaglio and relief. The course also introduces image generation from drawing and photography, use of Columbian and Rochat presses, studio safety and printmaking’s place in art and design history. Teaching combines practical studio work with tutor guidance and personalised feedback. Learners set targets through a Personal Learning Plan, record their technical development and review their progress during the course. There is no formal assessment.

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as learners with some printmaking experience who want to extend their understanding. Participation involves practical studio work, setting personal targets with the tutor and keeping written notes on developing practice.

Before you go

• Ink is provided by the college.
• Learners need to purchase paper, printing plates and lino, either from the college print room or elsewhere.
• A sketchbook is recommended for technical notes, ideas and developing compositions.
• Bring a pencil, pen, cotton rags and a range of nylon or hog-hair brushes.
• Wear appropriate clothing because printmaking can be messy.
• Oil-based inks and white spirit are used in the print studio; disposable gloves are provided.
