Printmaking Linocut

About this course

The course introduces relief printmaking through linocut, including image planning, safe carving and the production of a small edition using reduction techniques. Learners can work towards multi-coloured prints using registration, while those with more experience can develop an individual relief printmaking project. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussions and individual guidance. Examples of print and image making are used as references, with technical and critical feedback tailored to each learner’s ideas. Learners also record and assess their progress through a Learning Statement.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for learners at all levels. No previous printmaking experience is necessary, while learners with more experience can use the sessions to renew their knowledge or develop a personal relief printmaking project. Teaching includes both group activities and individual guidance.

• Drawing or design experience may be useful, but is not required
• Advanced and returning printmakers can pursue an individual project
• Learners should be prepared to follow studio health and safety procedures

Before you go

• Bring pencils, an image for reference, a sketchbook or notebook, an apron and gloves.
• Relief carving tools may be brought if available; further requirements will be discussed during the course.
• Most studio consumables, including basic inks and solvents, are included. Paper and lino are available to buy from the department at cost price.
• Health and safety guidance is provided, and learners must agree to follow the stated procedures. Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or cause irritation; disclose pregnancy or sensitivities to the tutor for advice.
• The print studio is not currently wheelchair accessible and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
