About this course

Learners use a landscape image to develop a textile piece, exploring how fragments, colour, texture and pattern can suggest real or abstract scenery. The course covers construction of a pieced top layer, followed by quilting with padding and backing cloth. Teaching combines demonstrations, samples, group tuition and individual guidance. Stitching and construction methods are explored through both hand and machine quilting, with opportunities to experiment and develop an individual design.

What you'll learn

  • Cut fabric using rotary cutters.
  • Join fabric pieces using free-form methods and quilting templates.
  • Use colour, texture and pattern to represent abstract or recognisable landscapes.
  • Select fabrics and threads in response to design ideas.
  • Construct a quilted panel or the starting point for a larger project.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at all levels, including those extending existing quilting skills. It uses group tuition alongside individual support, demonstrations and independent experimentation. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, understand health and safety guidance, and make basic measurements and calculations.

  • Existing quilting experience is not identified as a requirement.
  • Learners with quilting experience can use the course to consolidate and experiment with their skills.
  • Participants work within a group while receiving individual guidance when needed.

Before you go

  • Basic materials and access to resources are provided as part of the course.
  • Learners may bring fabric remnants for their quilted piece.
  • A sketchbook may be useful for recording ideas and developing the work.
