Raphael: The Rise and Dominance of a Renaissance Prodigy, 1483-1520

About this course

This course traces Raphael’s development from his father Giovanni Santi’s workshop through his early influences, Florentine period, papal commissions and Vatican frescoes. It considers Raphael’s use of drawing in design and printmaking, his engagement with antique art, and his relationships and rivalry with Michelangelo and Leonardo. The wider social, political and artistic conditions of the Italian Renaissance provide context for examining Raphael’s career and reputation. Teaching combines lectures, slide presentations, activities and group discussion, with handouts used to support the course.
