About this course
The course introduces key formal elements of filmmaking across different periods and national cinemas, alongside the artistic and industrial processes involved in producing films. Topics include the birth of cinema, German Expressionism, Soviet Montage, mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing, sound design and genre theory. Teaching combines tutor presentations, viewing of film extracts and class discussion, with attention to film aesthetics, critical analysis and the terminology used in film theory.
