About this course

The course examines political and social life in England from 1216 to 1299, including the relationship between Henry III and his barons, Edward I’s campaigns, the growth of towns, the friars, queenship, and developments in art and architecture. Teaching combines PowerPoint presentations with seminar-style discussion of translated primary sources, including government records and noble household accounts. Questionnaires support discussion of pre-session reading, while class debate also considers relevant material brought by participants.

What you'll learn

• Evaluate selected primary sources, including the Fine Rolls of Henry III and Eleanor de Montfort’s household accounts.
• Explain the causes and consequences of the conflict between Henry III and Simon de Montfort.
• Discuss queenship through the examples of Eleanor of Provence and Eleanor of Castile.
