Recorders: return to playing

About this course

The course develops recorder playing through tutor explanations and demonstrations, group playing, individual practice and class discussion. Participants work on fingering, breathing, articulation, intonation and music reading while exploring repertoire from different styles. Playing activities include unison work and parts in small ensembles, supported by aural skills and music theory. The course is intended for descant and/or treble recorder players returning to regular playing or extending their existing skills.

• Adjust intonation when playing alone and with others
• Perform a part in an ensemble piece
• Read and interpret recorder music notation

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for people who have studied recorder for at least a year or previously played and want to resume. The sessions combine whole-group playing with individual practice, discussion and theoretical study. Learners need to be able to listen to and follow instructions in English.

• Regular practice outside class is needed to make progress.
• The course covers both individual playing and participation in small ensembles.

• Bring a descant and/or treble recorder, as appropriate.
• Bring a notebook, pencil and eraser.
