About this course

The course introduces audio equipment, microphone use and basic home-studio setups, with practical work on recording guitar, bass guitar and vocals. Participants also explore programmed backing tracks, beats, MIDI instruments and fundamental mixing concepts. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, explanations, practical workshops, group and individual composition, listening discussions, lectures and audio-visual presentations. Examples use Logic Pro, although learners who are already confident with another digital audio workstation may use it for their own work; support for other software is more limited.

What you'll learn

  • Identify the main functions of basic audio equipment.
  • Apply fundamental microphone techniques.
  • Describe the components of a basic home-studio setup.
  • Record guitar, bass guitar and vocals using basic recording techniques.
  • Program backing tracks and MIDI instruments.
  • Explain fundamental concepts of audio mixing.

  • Bring a pen and paper for notes and a USB memory stick for saving work.
  • Ear plugs are strongly encouraged because sessions may involve high volume levels.
  • Some sessions may involve handling and lifting microphone stands and cables; safe handling advice is provided.
