What Beginner (A1) Italian means

At A1 Italian, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

Mi chiamo Anna. Abito a Londra.

My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    Vorrei un caffè, per favore.

I would like a coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    Scusi, dov’è la stazione?

Excuse me, where is the station?

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

This course revisits first-year Italian through topics including introductions, daily routines and travel. Learners will review present-tense verbs, adjectives, articles and other basic grammar while refreshing vocabulary and beginning to practise speaking and listening again. Teaching centres on spoken interaction and communication, with pair and group work, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. The course is designed to consolidate existing knowledge and support progression to a level 2 course.

What you'll learn

  • Talk about themselves and other people in Italian
  • Use present-tense verbs in basic communication
  • Describe daily routines in the present and past
  • Review the use of adjectives and articles in basic Italian

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners who have already studied Italian, such as those with around a year of previous study or those who recently completed a beginners’ course. The Beginner (A1) label indicates a foundation-level course, but it is not designed for complete beginners.

  • Suitable for revising recently studied beginner-level Italian
  • Involves regular spoken interaction with partners and groups
  • Learners may use role plays and games as part of class activities
