About this course

The course combines practical music theory and improvisation workshops with tuition for participants’ chosen instruments or vocal work. Learners explore technique, tone, repertoire, phrasing and spontaneous music-making through guided exercises and varied musical structures. Group activities include small and large ensembles, a big band session and evening jam sessions, with an emphasis on developing material for performance. Vocal and instrumental masterclasses provide feedback on performance skills, while ensemble work addresses balance, group dynamics and sectional playing.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for instrumentalists and vocalists at a beginner-level stage, but it is not suitable for complete beginners. Participants should be prepared to work in ensembles, take part in group workshops and contribute to jam sessions and performance-focused activities.

• Participants complete a background information sheet before the course so that ensembles and groups can be organised according to their experience and abilities.
